If you’re running Google Search ads through an agency, there’s a good chance your campaigns changed in the last six months without anyone telling you.
Google AI Max launched in beta in May 2025 and came out of beta in April 2026. It’s not a new campaign type. It’s a feature layer that activates inside your existing Search campaigns and hands three decisions you used to control — what queries trigger your ads, what your ads say, and where traffic lands on your site — to Google’s AI. Google’s headline number is 14% more conversions at a similar cost. But there’s a version of this story most business owners don’t hear until they’re looking at a budget report that doesn’t make sense.
Three things change when AI Max is turned on.
The first is search term matching. Your existing keywords stop being the only trigger for your ads. AI Max adds what Google calls “keywordless” matching — it reads your landing pages, your ad copy, and your campaign history, then starts serving ads on queries that aren’t in your keyword list but that Google’s AI considers related. It’s broad match, but pulling signals from your entire website instead of just your keyword list.
The second is text customization. Google’s AI generates new headlines and descriptions in real time, based on what someone just searched. It pulls from your landing pages, existing ads, and its own generative models. The copy changes per search. You don’t approve each version.
The third is final URL expansion, and it’s the one that catches people off guard most often. When it’s active, Google decides which page on your site to send someone to — not necessarily the page you assigned to the ad. If Google’s AI decides a different page on your site better matches a search, traffic goes there. Your carefully built landing page stops being the default.
All three features can be toggled on or off independently. The default when AI Max is enabled is all three on.
The official case studies are real. L’Oréal doubled their conversion rate and cut cost-per-conversion by 31%. MyConnect generated 16% more leads at 13% lower cost. Google reports 14% more conversions at a similar cost across AI Max advertisers.
The broader data is more complicated.
A study covering more than 250 real-world campaigns found median CPA went up 16% alongside the revenue gains. One agency running a head-to-head test found AI Max finished last on cost-per-conversion — 128% more expensive than phrase match in their account. Monks Agency analyzed roughly 30,000 search terms across multiple accounts and found 99% of AI Max impressions generated zero conversions, with less than half of those terms traceable to any existing keyword in the account. A separate documented case showed AI Max expanding so aggressively into competitor brand terms that they consumed 69% of total Search impressions.
A survey of working PPC professionals found only 16% report good results with AI Max. The other 84% report neutral or negative outcomes.
That doesn’t mean AI Max doesn’t work. It means it works in specific conditions: clean account structure, solid conversion tracking, meaningful monthly conversion volume, and someone actively reviewing the search term report. The AI expands from whatever foundation it’s given. Messy foundation going in means messy expansion coming out.
Let’s see if we’re a fit.
If you have an agency managing your Google Ads and haven’t had a direct conversation about AI Max, these are the questions worth asking.
Were negative keyword lists built before AI Max was activated? AI Max respects negatives at the campaign and ad group level, but it needs those lists in place before the AI starts expanding reach. Without them, budget goes where the AI decides to take it — including competitors’ brand terms, irrelevant queries, and low-intent searches that were never part of your target.
Are text guidelines configured? Google added this feature in February 2026. It lets you set term exclusions — words that can’t appear in AI-generated copy — and plain-language messaging restrictions that guide the AI’s tone. Without guidelines in place, the AI writes your ads without constraints. For most SMBs that’s a minor issue. For any business with specific compliance language, pricing claims, or precise brand positioning, unconfigured text generation is a real risk.
Is final URL expansion right for your specific setup? This feature helps e-commerce businesses with large product catalogs, where multiple pages legitimately match different queries. It’s a harder call for lead generation businesses with a specific offer and a landing page built around a single conversion path. When final URL expansion is on, pinning your preferred page doesn’t hold — the AI chooses the destination.
Is someone actually reviewing the search term report? AI Max provides full search term visibility, which is a real advantage over Performance Max. But visibility only helps if someone is looking. Ask what the report showed last month and which queries got added to negatives.
Google announced in April 2026 that campaigns running Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets, or campaign-level broad match will automatically upgrade to AI Max starting in September 2026. If your campaigns use any of those settings, enrollment happens whether you initiate it or not.
The practical recommendation from Google and independent analysts is the same: get ahead of September. Upgrade on your own timeline so you control the configuration. Campaigns that auto-upgrade get Google’s defaults. Campaigns that upgrade deliberately get your business logic instead.
AI Max is Google’s direction for Search advertising, and the September auto-upgrade removes any ambiguity about that. The feature can generate real lift. It can also quietly redirect budget to queries, pages, and audiences you never approved — and in accounts where no one is checking, it often does.
Agencies that were on top of this already had the conversation with clients before enabling any of it. If that conversation hasn’t happened with yours, that’s the thing worth following up on.
If you want a straightforward read on what’s actually running in your Google Ads account, let’s talk. ADLG Marketing works with SMBs who want to know what’s happening with their ad budget, not just what’s supposed to be happening.
